Thank you for your interest in the Healthcare Connect Academy (HCA), an educational enrichment program for middle school and high school students interested in exploring careers in medicine and healthcare through hands-on learning, internship opportunities, and workforce development trainings.

Healthcare Connect Academy is the only youth healthcare training program in our region which offers:

  • Middle school students the opportunity to grow with the program and transition through four levels of programming.
  • High school students year-round learning opportunities and a one-week summer healthcare intensive at five different medical facilities.
  • Pre-college programming that includes year-round learning, summer healthcare intensive, one-week internship, letter of recommendation for college, resume building workshops, and a certificate of completion with documented clinical and community hours.  Students may also earn the certificate in healthcare communication offered by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) and Health Care Connect.

The Healthcare Connect Academy was created by Health Care Connect, an initiative of Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC), comprised of more than 60 hospitals, continuing care retirement communities, home health companies, acute rehabilitation facilities, educational institutions, and county development offices and related agencies that are committed to improving the quality of health in Chester County and surrounding region. The program model was designed by the creator of Girls In Medicine and Medicine & Healthcare Leadership Camp at The Clinic in Phoenixville, PA.

Middle School Programs

 Examining the Basics  Scanning the Facts
Students will work with medical professionals and educators to explore the human body and its basic functions:  Students will gain a deeper understanding of the body’s systems – especially the various effects of diseases and their treatment options. Hands-on activities include:
  • blood typing
  • brain matter
  • skeletal system
  • stethoscope
  • cell diffusion
  • and more!
  • tours of medical facilities
  • forensic science
  • X-ray technology
  • EMT and CPR
  • volunteer opportunities working with patients

Year-round High School Programs

Students in the high school program have the opportunity to attend monthy workshops, community events, virtual learning sessions, and volunteer programs to enhance their learning.

Exploring Healthcare and Medicine  Understanding Patient Care
Students explore how medical equipment and procedues are used to treat various medical conditions.  During the one-week summer session, students will participate in hands-on learning activities at a different medical facility each day to gain knowledge about the following:  Students learn skills to provide basic care for patients in hospitals, long-term care faciliteis, and other medical organizations.  Each student participates in a one-week internship at a medical facility and attends a one-week hands-on  healthcare intensive.  Highlights include:
  • oncology – cancer care
  • radiology
  • emergency procedures
  • physical therapy/occupational therapy
  • surgical procedures
  • veterinary medicine
  • and more!
