Public-facing awards program highlights farmers’ impact on local economy, community, and future of agriculture

POTTSTOWN, Pa. — March 31, 2026 Chester County’s agricultural community was in the spotlight Tuesday afternoon as AgConnect hosted its inaugural Best of Agriculture Awards at Lundale Farm, recognizing local leaders and innovators in farming.

The event brought together farmers, officials, and community members to celebrate the county’s agricultural heritage and future. AgConnect Executive Advisory Committee Chair Greg Newell opened the program, followed by remarks from the Chester County Commissioners and local agricultural partners.

Chester County’s farmers are the backbone of our community,” said Board of Commissioners in a joint statement. “Their dedication not only sustains our local economy but preserves our landscapes and strengthens our food systems. This new, public-facing program shines a well-deserved spotlight on the individuals and operations that make our agricultural sector thrive.”

Awards were presented across the three categories for the year, with the winners being recognized for their leadership, innovation, and contributions:

  • Young & Emerging Person in Agriculture – Becky Brett of Toad Stop Farm
  • Woman in Agriculture – Samantha Smenkowski-Heacock of Full Circle CSA
  • Community Impact in Agriculture – Growing Roots Partners

Winners were also given the opportunity to share brief remarks, offering personal reflections on their work and the future of farming in the region.

The program also included remarks from Lundale Farm Executive Director Becki Patterson, and Trellis for Tomorrow’s Director of Programming, David Ryle, highlighting ongoing efforts to support agricultural education and sustainability in the region.

Following the awards, attendees enjoyed local food samples, networking, and optional tours of the Ag Learning Center. The event concluded with closing remarks for AgConnect leadership.
